The Eynon wills from the period 1700 to 1860 are an invaluable source of information for the family historian. This is because they cover a period of time which precedes and overlaps the start of the Civil records which began in 1837. Their primary importance lies in the detailed explanation of familial relationships between the bequeather and benefactor(s) of the will. The relationship is often spelled out to the third generation if the bequeather was old enough to have grandchildren or even great grandchildren at the time of death.
Of equal, but often overlooked importance, the wills also provide a flavor of the historical period through the enumeration of those earthly possessions that the dying person found important enough to bequeath to his/her progeny. Technically, the will was for landed estates, whereas the testament was for moveable goods. However, these terms are often used interchangeably and together as in the "Last Will and Testament." In addition, there are grey areas between the two categories, in which the composer of the will may not own the landed estate, but only the house which resides on the property. Generally, the wills were transcribed by the local parish priest, in many cases, the only educated person in the parish.
The wills from this period which were administered through the Probate of St. David's (covering Pembrokeshire, which is were the majority of the Eynons were located) are found in the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth. The index for the Eynon wills are divided into several periods; 1556-1699,1700-1749, and 1750-1860. Currently work is being conducted to transcribe the wills and input the data into a computer, for the 89 wills from the 1700-1860 period. Due to the time consuming task of reading and transcribing the texts, however, this guide will not be ready until sometime in 1999. Listed below is the alphabetical index of the 89 Eynon wills from 1700-1860 and the parish to which the deceased belonged. The SD number refers to St. David's, the year they were proved, and the identifying (call) number for the library.
