A Short History of Civil Registration Records

With the enactment of the Civil Law on 1 July 1837, everyone living in Wales and England was required to register 1) births, 2) marriages and 3) deaths from that date forward at the nearest district registration office. However, it was not until 1872 that penalties for non-registration were enacted. Thus, the records are not 100 percent complete, nor are they devoid of inaccuracies, nevertheless, they hold a gold mine of information for the family historian. The original individual records are still held in the local record offices while copies were sent to the main record office in London.

In addition, Indexes have been created to catalogue all the records from 1837 to the present. The main Indexes are held in St. Catherine's House in London, and microfilm copies are held in the National Library of Wales, the West Glamorgan Archives Office (Swansea), the Carmarthenshire Record Office (as of December 1997), and possibly in some Mormon Family History Centers. In all, there are over 20,000 microfiches of the Indexes. Each year of the three Indexes have been divided into four quarters--March, June, September and December, and the event (birth, marriage or death) that occurred in that quarter was summed up and listed under that quarter. In short, a marriage in January, February, or March is listed in the March quarter. Basically, what is provided in any one particular quarter is the surname, first name (in alphabetical order), and the registration district. In the case of the death Index, beginning from March 1866 the age of death is also provided.

Members of the Eynon Family History Society have pooled their resources and transcribed a large part of the Indexes, inputting them into a computer. This present volume then, is a transcription of all the Eynon references in the the three Indexes -- birth, marriage, and death records running from the enactment of the Civil Law in 1837 up to 1900, the turn of the century. It includes 1,654 Eynon births, 816 Eynon marriages, and 1,036 Eynon deaths during this 63 year period. Out of respect for privacy, we have stopped the compiling at 1900. It is accompanied by an explanation of the procedure for applying for the actual birth, marriage or death records, and applications forms.
